Question
I just took my grand-daughter to a lab yesterday to be tested for lead, it was part of her 18 month check up. The doctor called our house the following day and asked to have the baby brought back to the lab. Her hemoglobin levels were low? I'm not sure if that is spelled right. I am wondering what the concern is and if it is related to lead based paint in the blood?
Answer
Low hemoglobin level is called as anemia. Anemia in children most commonly nutritional of which iron deficient diet is the main culprit. Lead poisoning can lead to anemia, however it is very rare. You grand-daughter would require evaluation for the anemia in form of more blood tests.
